Remediating Commercial Flood Damage In Minneapolis Businesses
Minneapolis is a wonderful city with a great history of river travel, music, and education. The source of that river travel, the Mississippi, is also the source of flood problems and issues for area residents and business owners. Having Cedar Lake, and Lakes Calhoun and Harriet within the city limits does not help the situation either.
The resulting commercial flood damage to Minneapolis businesses can knock down walls, smash furniture, destroy inventory, and leave a commercial operation in ruins. SERVPRO response teams train extensively to remove water, dry the structure and property inside, remediate as much of the damage as possible, and replace or rebuild what is not restorable.
The team’s Applied Structural Drying Technicians (ASDs) and Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRTs) specialize in returning even the most badly damaged facility and its inventory to a usable, saleable, condition if possible. In a furniture store, that involves not only the store itself, but the items for sale, and the carpets, walls, and other props used to create the bedrooms, living rooms, and more for display.
After specialists use pumps and extractors to draw the water from inside the building, the WRTs then move in to examine what is restorable and requires disposal. Since this is outside floodwater, it contains soil and a host of other contaminants. That means the response team leader cannot guarantee that any of the carpets are clean. Unless the owner requests putting them aside, the WRTs dispose of them as a first step before cleaning the floors and walls affected by the contaminated water.
Meanwhile, the ASDs set-up a series of fans and air movers to dry the floors and walls. For the false walls on the displays, technicians can direct the air movers across and up them if needed to dry the fabric and frames. Since water can cause drywall on the building interior walls to quickly split and crumble, SERVPRO team members have to demolish the panels and replace them if they absorbed too much floodwater. Completing the task simply depends on the number of affected panels.
The goal for SERVPRO of Minnetonka response teams is to help our Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and Osseo customers reopen their businesses for their customers as quickly as we can provide a dry, safe environment for everyone.
